Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions. Learning Outcomes	Course Student Learning Outcomes upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes. PSLO 1 measured by essay rubric. 2. Develop ideas and synthesize primary and secondary sources within focused academic arguments, including one or more research-based essays. Lecture Topics Outline	Each week we will cover a selection of literature ranging from fictional short stories to poetry to drama. Each week students will be asked to read the assigned works, post in a Discussion Board every Wednesday (answering prompts and questions), and complete a 2-3 MLA formatted Response Paper based on the weekly readings and discussions; these Response Papers count for almost half of the entire grade for the semester, so they need to be taken seriously and submitted on time in order to succeed in this class. After Spring break, there will be a heavily weighted Research Paper, and we will spend 3 weeks working on this assignment together; you will have multiple parts to this large research paper, and you need to receive my approval on each step before moving on to the next. There will be a Midterm Exam before we break for Spring Break and a Final Exam the last week of the semester. I will also assign pop quizzes over the readings if at any point I feel that students are not engaged in the discussions or reading the assigned texts.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	All of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. ***Plagiarism policy will strictly enforced: a first offense will result in a 0 for the assignment, and the second offense will result in failing the class. Ignorance is not a defense. A Plagiarism Contract will be posted in class and virtually acknowledged by each student who verifies he/she understands exactly what plagiarism is and the consequences if it is committed. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with as such. Late work will will not be accepted, but early submissions are encouraged. You have assignments due weekly, so if you find yourself unable to turn them in on Wednesdays and Fridays then you should turn in work Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Attendance Policy	Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three unexcused absences will receive an academic penalty in the form of a grade reduction. Excessive tardiness will, likewise, have an effect on your grade. As an online course, your "attendance" will be noted by your log in access dates on Blackboard, which can be seen by the instructor. Additionally, I will be providing weekly discussion posts in which a student must respond in order to be counted "present" and "participating" in the class.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

Other	I will be grading your essays using a ten category 1301/1302 Essay Grading Rubric, which I will provide for you at the beginning of the semester. I will be posting your grades on Blackboard for you to access at any point throughout the semester. If you would like to meet with me about your grade, then you will need to schedule an appointment with me. Communication is key. I receive emails directly to my phone, and I am quick to respond. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns at any point in the semester, please feel free to reach out to me. There is no need for you to go through the semester with any unanswered questions or unaddressed issues.
